Topic 2- Morphology And Morphemes Flashcards
(6 cards)
What is morphology?
Study, analysis, and description of the structure of words and other linguistic units, such as root words, prefixes and suffixes
What is a morpheme?
Smallest meaningful unit in language.
Not necessarily the same as a word
Example: “Unbreakable” is composed of three morphemes: un- (a bound morpheme signifying “not”), -break- (the root, a free morpheme), and -able (a free morpheme signifying “can be done”)
What is the difference between a morpheme and a word?
The main difference between a morpheme and a word is that a morpheme sometimes does not stand alone, but a word, by definition, always stands alone.
How are words formed?
Formed using a number of linguistic elements: prefixes, suffixes and combined forms
What are the 3 types of verbs?
Action: jump, think
Linking: appear, become, feel - they don’t describe a direct action taken or controlled by the subject
Helping: might, shall, will - used with a main verb
What are the 8 types of nouns?
- proper nouns (always capitalised)
- common nouns
- concrete nouns
- abstract nouns (express things that Connor be seen or touched ex: liberty and love)
- collective nouns (group, flock, choir)
- compound nouns (haircut, toothbrush)
- countable nouns
- non-countable nouns. (Homework, money, travel)
