Topic 3 Flashcards
Environmental Change and Management (14 cards)
Land Use
The purpose of how the land was used; development, conservation or mixed used.
Six Main Purposes of Land Use
Residential, Commercial, Industrial, Recreation, Transportation, Agriculture.
Land Use
Physical Surface of the Earth (i.e. Lakes, Soil, Vegetation, Exposed Rocks etc.)
Destructive Waves
Generated in stormy conditions; these waves increased the erosion of coastal forms.
Backwash is more powerful than swash, sand is stripped from beaches.
Constructive Waves
Generated in calm conditions, builds up sediments and rebuilds coastal forms; giving rise to beaches & dunes.
Swash is more powerful than backwash.
Longshore Drift
When waves come into the coast at an angle. Swash delivers the sand at an angle, backwash still takes the sand under the beach due to gravity.
Responsible for erosion/degradation of coastlines and takes sand in large quantities.
Depositional Forms
The process where a mix of sediment (i.e. sand/rubble) gathers/builds up in one place; expanding the landform.
Depositional Forms - Beaches
Built-up sediment comes from rivers, soft sand easily eroded by storms, and constructive waves repair/return the sand.
Depositional Forms - Dunes
Developed dune vegetation holds the sand together, development prevents the plants from dying due to harsh conditions, vegetation is important for dunes as it stabilizes them.
Coastal Defences
Measures taken to protect the coast and the limit erosion due to destructive waves or natural ocean processes; encroachment
Coastal Defenses - Groynes
Structure built perpendicular to the shoreline to reduce longshore drift and trap sediments.
Coastal Defenses - Breakwaters
Permanent Structure, built to protect area from destructive waves, storm surges & minimizes erosions.
Coastal Defenses - Sea Walls
Built parallel to the shore to protect inland area against wave action, prevents coastal erosion.
