How do we define performance?

A

-Performance can be defined as the extent to which an organizational member contributes to acheiving the objectives of the organization.
-Performance=Ability*Motivation
-Interestingly, cogntitive ability and motivation are positively correlated.
-Cognitive ability is a much better predictor of performance than motivation; however, both were equally important to other people’s perception of performance.

A

-General cognititve ability is a term used to refer to a person’s basic information-processing capacities and cognitive resources.
-General cognitive ability measured in high school has been found to predict career sucess in terms of job prestige, pay, and income towards the end of one’s work life.

A

-Emotional intelligence has to do with the ability to understand and manage one’s own and others’ feelings and emotions.
-Notably, emotional intelligence has been found to be most important for employee’s job performance when employees have lower levels of cognitive ability.

A

-People who are high in need for affiliation have a strong desire to establish and maintain friendly, compatible interpersonal relationships.
-They can learn networking quickly.
-They prefer to avoid conflict and competition with others, and they can show conformity to the wishes of their friends.
-The n Aff motive is an example of a belongness or related need.

A

-McClelland predicts that people will be motivated to seek out and perform well in jobs that match their needs.
-Those who have high n Ach should be strongly motivated by sales jobs or entrepreneurial positions; because those jobs offer feedback, personal responsibility, and opportunity to set goals.
-People with high n Aff will want jobs such as social work or customer service because they can establish good relations with others.
-Those with high n Pow will be motivated for jobs that have a strong impact on others–such as journalism and management.
-McClelland highlights that the most affective managers have a low need for affilitation, a high need for power, and the ability to direct power toward organizational goals.
