Plant mineral ions: What are the independent variables
- growth solution
- presence of mineral ion
Plant mineral ions: How do you measure the dependent variable?
- plant height
- plan mass
- leaf colour/number
Plant mineral ions: list the control variables (organism)
- age
- species
- size
- storage conditions
- growing conditions
Plant mineral ions: list the control variables (environmental)
- temperature
- CO2 conc.
- light intensity

- water availability
Plant mineral ions: list the control variables (procedural)
- volume of solution
- number of mung beans
- mass/volume of perlite
- growth time
Plant fibres: what equipment can be used to measure force better
a forcemeter
Microbiology: what values should be used for the environmental controls
- incubation temperature- 25*C
- incubation time- 24hrs
GIVE SET VALUE
microbiology: what is a bacterial lawn
a uniform spread of bacteria on an agar dish
Microbiology: How do you write your conclusions
- (extract) is the most/least effective against…
- (bacteria) is the most/least sensitive to…
Define species
A group of organisms with similar morphology, physiology and behaviour which can interbreed to produce fertile offspring. Will be reproductively isolated from other species. Will have very similar genetic profiles
Define biodiversity
The variety of species and the range of taxa (species diversity), the variety of alleles within a species (genetic diversity) and the variety of ecosystems (ecosystem diversity) of which organism are a part.
what is morphology
The structural components
- what we see
What is physiology
The reactions and processes
What is species richness
The number of species found in a habitat
- does not take into account population sizes
- measured by counting the NUMBER of species present
What is species evenness
- a community is which most of he species have similar abundances
- population smuts be counted and COMPARED
A diverse community has…
- high species richness
- hock species evenness
What is the diversity index
- a quantitive score for biodiversity, allows comparison
- higher score means more diverse
What is the diversity index equation
D = N(N-1)/sum of n(n-1)
N- total number of all
n- total of one species
Define biodiversity hotspot
An area with very high levels of biodiversity
Define endemic species
When a species is only found in one geographical location
What is an indicator species
A species particularly susceptible to change
- used to measure biodiversity
Define niche
The role of an organism/species within its habitat/ecosystem
Define habitat
The place where a species lives. Has a particular set of conditions which supports a distinctive combination of organisms
