Q

Anti discriminatory practise for race

A
  • staff using appropriate racial terms and challenging other staff/service users who use inappropriate terms- eg in a day centre this can range from gentle explanation to formal reporting of deliberate racism

*providing resources to promote racial inclusivity- staff in an early years setting procuring books and toys reflecting different races

*making provision for service users whose first language is not English, for example a doctor using the services of a translator in a hospital setting or staff in a GP practice providing booklets about its services in a range of languages reflective of the local community

Q

Anti discriminatory practise for mental health

A

*Staff taking into account service users’ mental health in their interactions with them, e.g. a midwife spending extra time listening to the concerns of a mother who is experiencing post-natal depression

*Staff using appropriate language about mental illness and challenging other staff or service users who use inappropriate language, for example in a day centre – this can range from gentle explanation to formal reporting of deliberate discriminatory behaviour

*Staff including all service users in activities no matter what their mental health status e.g. an activities coordinator in a nursing home including service users with dementia in activities such as crafts

Q

Examples of discrimination- beliefs/religious values

A

*Not consulting service users from minority religions about dietary requirements linked to their faith in a residential care home whilst catering for the main religious groups, for example by having fish on the menu for Christians on days of abstinence, but not having Kosher food for Jewish residents

*Not asking service users from minority religions about spiritual needs or religious practices in a hospital, whilst providing facilities and organising pastoral visits for more common religious groups, e.g. for Christian faiths

Q

Examples of discrimination- gender

A

*Staff making assumptions based on stereotypical views of gender about what male and female service users want to do in a day centre, e.g. offering craft activities
like crochet and sewing only to women

*Staff making inappropriate comments with reference to gender in a mental health day centre, e.g. female support staff making inappropriate jokes about men being useless when it comes to looking after themselves

*Managers selecting resources that don’t reflect gender equality, e.g. jigsaws in an early years setting only showing males and females in stereotypical roles, such as firemen and policemen but no female fire fighters or female police officers
