Topic 5 - Unit 20 Oxidation And Reduction Flashcards
1
Q
Reduction and Oxidation
A
They always take place together (called the REDOX reaction)
2
Q
Definitions of Reduction (4 in total)
A
- The loss of oxygen from a chemical species
- Gain of hydrogen by a chemical species
- Gain of electron by a chemical species (RIG)
4.
3
Q
Definitions of Oxidation (4 in total)
A
- Gain of oxygen by a chemical species
- Loss of hydrogen from a chemical species
- Loss of electrons from a chemical species (OIL)
- Increase in oxidation number
4
Q
Oxidising Agent
A
A chemical species that causes oxidation of another chemical species while itself becomes reduced in the process.
5
Q
Reducing Agent
A
A chemical species that causes reduction of another chemical species while itself becomes oxidised in the process.
6
Q
Procedures when writing a half equation in acid solution
A
- Balance the numbers of all atoms except hydrogen and oxygen.
- Add water (H2O) to the side deficient in oxygen to balance the number of hydrogen atoms.
- Add H+ to the side deficient in hydrogen to balance the number of hydrogen atoms.
- Add e- to the side deficient in negative charge to balance the charge.
