- Reflecting on your interests, skills, values and preferences
- Researching the education, training and work options available to you
- Making sure your work fits with your personal circumstances
- Developing and adapting your plans to help you manage changes in your personal life and the world of work which is constantly changing with new technology and new employment patterns

  • Research and explore careers, occupations and area of interest in learning
  • Research the specific qualifications and skills required for preferred jobs and courses
  • Compare their findings to their self-evaluation in order to see if there are missing skills, qualifications etc
  • Identify gaps in their own knowledge and qualifications
  • Set their overall realistic goals/ambitions to get them to where they want to get to

Measurable - It should be measurable so that you know when the target has been met
Attainable - Meaning it should be realistic and possible to achieve
Relevant - The targets should bee relevant to your personal circumstances
Time related - Meaning they should be achievable within a given timeframe

  • seek advice from subject teachers to find out strengths and weakness and how to improve in weaker areas

  • Gain additional qualifications
  • develop skills by participating in extra-curricular activities in or outside of school

Negative external infuences can be the reason why some young people don’t make good decisions and may then not access further education , training and employment.
This can result in long term disadvantages like lack of secure employment in their adult life, poorer living standards and poorer health
