9
Q

how to beta minus particles decay

A

they decay and form a proton and electron . the electron is emitted oout while the proton stays in the nucleus

Q

what is the mass of a gamma particle

A

it has no mass so it can pass straight through materials and not collide with any of the atoms

16
Q

what is the emission of a neutron

A

if a nucleus contains to many neutrons it would just through out a neutron to make it stable

17
Q

what is beta plus decay

A

the proton forms a neutron and a positron and then the positron is ejected and kicked out of the Nucleus

18
Q

name three ways of detecting radioactivity

A

photographic film and a Geiger counter , and a cloud chamber

19
Q

how do you detect radiation using a photographic film

A

a bright spot will appear when ionizing radiation hits the film

20
Q

how do you detect radiation using a Geiger counter

A

Cloud chamber
ionsing radiation enters the tube full of low pressure gases . it ionizes the atom in the gas knocking out the electrons and the gas can conduct electricity and completes a circuit . current flows between the electrodes and it produces a clicking noise and the count rates is the number of decays recorded every second

21
Q

how do you use a lcoud chaamber to detect radiation

A

the cloud chamber has alcohol vapour the ionising raidation leaves and then enters the chamber and leaves behind its air and then the alcohol vapour condenses on the raidaiated air causing there to be trail of radiation

22
Q

two ways nuclear fission can happen

A

by either happening spontaneously*rare) or by splitting up a neutron

23
Q

what is the firrst stage of nuclear fission

A

start of with a large and unstable nuclei and we fire a relatively slow moving neutron at it.

24
Q

why does fring a nuetron at a unstable nuclei causises to be

25
what does firing a neutron at an unstable nuclei cause is to split up into
causing it to split apart into two smaller nuclei(daughter nuclei) and two or three more neutrons . loads of enrgy in the form of gamma radiation
26
what will happen when the unstable nuclie makes 2 or three more neutrons
they can repeat the process again with another nucleiand then more daughter nuclei , enrgy in the form of gamma rays and neutrons is released . which again allows the process to start over
27
what does nuclear fission lead to
a chain reaction . where the first fission can trigger more fission triggering even more fission
28
what has to be carefully controlled in the nuclear reactors
the rate fo nuclear fissions
29
what can lower the nuclear reactors rate ofnulcear fisison and how does it do this
control rods. it is lowered into the reactor and absorbes the neutrons
30
what do moderators do
control the speed at which neutrons are travelling in the ractor
31
what are used to control the nuclear fission recators
moderators and control rods
32
where does nuclear fission occur in
the nuclear reactor
