What is the aim of the police?
To reduce crime and maintain law and order e.g. protection of life, preservation of peace, preventing and detecting crime

They work alomgside communities and they have the power to arrest, detain, search and interview under the Police and Criminal Evidence Act

What is the working practices of the police?
Every police forces have a team of officers who are responsible for general beat duties and respond to emergency and non emergency calls 24/7 all year round. After a probationary period of the beat duties, many officers opt for specialist roles such as CID, counterterrorism, dog handling, etc. Neighbourhood officers are assigned to local community groups such as neighbourhood watch schemes. They also work with courts when offenders are released on probation.

The police used to be the one to give chrages to offenders however the CPS was created in order to promote independence and leaving the police to investigate crimes.

What is the two part test used by the CPS?
It decides whether there is enough reliab;e and credible evidence to give a realistic prospect of conviction in court, however if there isn’t then they will not prosecute.

Only used where the suspect presents a substantial bail risk and not all evidence is available at the time when the suspect is to be released from custody
