Flashcards in Topic 7 Deck (12):
1

What is Biodiversity?

Biodiversity is the variety of different species of organisms on earth or within an ecosystem

2

What caused a large increase in human population?

Due to advancements in medicine and farming

3

How does human pollution effect water, land and air?

Water- Sewage and toxic chemicals in lakes and rivers
Land- Toxic chemicals used for farming as well as nuclear waste
Air- Smoke and acidic gases released into the atmosphere

4

What is abiotic factors?

Non living factors of the environment like temperature

5

What is Biotic?

Living factors of the environment like food

6

What 4 things do species rely on?

Food
Shelter
Pollination
Seed dispersal

7

How do abiotic factors effect an ecosystem?

Moisture level
Light intensity
Temperature
Carbon dioxide level (for plants)
Wind intensity and direction
Oxygen level (for aquatic animals)
Soil pH and mineral content

8

How do biotic factors effect an ecosystem?

New predators
Competition- One species may out compete other species
New pathogens
Availability of food

9

How do you collect data with a transect?

Mark out a line
Collect data along the line
Count all organisms that touch the line

10

How does availability of water effect the distribution of organisms?

Some animals and plant species changes during the dry and wet season e.g Wildebeest migrate to the north and south of Africa

11

How does temperature effect the distribution of organisms?

Bird species in Germany is changing due to temperature e.g European bee-eater which is a Mediterranean specieS but is found in Germany

12

How does atmospheric gases effect the distribution of organisms?

Some species changes in area where there is more air pollution e.g Lichen can’t grow in areas of high sulfur dioxide which is given out by factories
