Topic 7 Ecology Flashcards
(11 cards)
Biodiversity
A measure of the number of different species living in an area
Population
A number of organisms of the same species living in an area
Habitat
Where a population lives
Environment
An organisms surroundings. It contains factors that influence the organism. These factors can be divided into abiotic and biotic factors
Abiotic
Non living factors eg temperature
Biotic
Living factors eg a predator
Community
Several populations of different species living in habitats close together
Ecosystem
An area where a community of organisms live and are affected by a range of environmental factors
Sampling
Counting the number of a certain organism in an area. We use a quadrat to measure this area. We take a random sample and take an average to find the estimated total number of organisms in a large area
Benefits of random sampling
To prevent bias
How to decide which areas to sample in a large area
A random number generator
