What can you observed when you burn alkenes in air?
A smoky flame due to incomplete combustion
What do hydrocarbons combust to produce?
Water and carbon dioxide
What do alkenes produce when they react with hydrogen?
Alkanes
What do alkenes react with water to produce?
An alcohol
What do alkenes react with halogens to produce?
A halogenoalkane
What is the functional group for alcohols
-OH
What happens when alcohols react with sodium?
Sodium replaced the hydrogen in the hydroxide
Hydrogen is produced
What is produced when an alcohol reacts with an oxidizing agent?
A carboxylic acid
What conditions are required for the fermentation of sugar using yeast?
- warm temperatures
- oxygen supply
What do alcohols combust to produce?
Carbon dioxide and water
How does the length of the alchohol affect its solubility in water?
The longer the alchohol the less soluble it is
What is the functional group of carboxyllic acids?
-COOH
What happens when carboxyllic acids react with carbonates?
Produces a salt, water and carbon dioxide
How is a salt formed when carboxyllic acids react with carbonates?
- the metal (attached to the carbonate) replaces the hydrogen in the COOH
What is produced when carboxyllic acids acids react with alcohols?
An ester and water
What type of acid is a carboxyllic acid?
Weak acid
What is addition polymerization ?
When a many monomer joins to form a polymer
What’s happens to an alkene when it undergoes addition polymerization?
The double bond is broken
What is condensation polymerization?
- when two monomers (with different functional groups) join
What do amino acids gave that make them unique?
Two functional groups
Means they can undergo condensation polymerization alone
What are some naturally occurring polymers?
DNA, starch, cellulose, proteins
