Topic 7 - Redox Reactions and Oxidation Numbers Flashcards
(7 cards)
What is oxidation in terms of electrons?
Oxidation is the removal of electrons.
What is reduction in terms of electrons?
Reduction is the addition of electrons.
What happens to electrons in a redox reaction?
The number of electrons lost equals the number gained.
What tool is used to track electron loss or gain in redox reactions?
Oxidation numbers.
How can oxidation numbers help in redox reactions?
They help determine which species are oxidised or reduced, and allow writing of half-equations.
What are half-equations in redox reactions?
Equations showing only the oxidation or only the reduction process with electrons included.
How is the full redox equation obtained?
By combining the oxidation and reduction half-equations so the number of electrons lost equals gained.
