Topic 7 Revision Questions Flashcards

1
Q

How are major Biomes (tropical, temperate, boreal, temperate grasslands, desert and Tundra) influenced by climate?

A

Tropical Rainforest- Wet and moist all year round, meaning fast vegetation growth, rapid decay of pollution and a large biodiversity.

Q

How is the Tundra biome affected and influenced by climate?

A

Very cold, limited sunlight, Icy. Only animals and organisms which are able to live in toughest conditions can survive here.

Q

How is the Boreal biome affected and influenced by climate?

A

In the boreal it is relatively cold, and dry. The vegetation here is evergreen and the food web is small.

Q

How is the Desert biome affected and influenced by climate?

A

Very hot and dry conditions during the day, limited animals survive. Any vegetation would need a high drought tolerance. Freezing by night.

Q

How is the Temperate grasslands biome affected and influenced by climate?

A

High quality soil, packed with nutrients. These grasslands have hot summers but cold winters. There isn’t many trees, nor is there animals and a large food web.

Q

Local factors such as (altitude) can alter the Biome distribution locally and how the flora and abiotic components of Biomes interact?

A

The higher the altitude, the colder the temperature gets. As the temperature drops, less and less plants are able to grow as the soil becomes frozen and difficult to be of any use.

Q

Local factors such as Soil type can alter the Biome distribution locally and how the flora and abiotic components of Biomes interact?

A

The better quality of soil, the more the plants are nutritiously supported. Soil type can also be affected by weather eg. Warm moist soil will be perfect for rapid growth but high altitude, frozen soil will be near impossible for growth.

Q

Local factors such as (rock type) can alter the Biome distribution locally and how the fauna and abiotic components of Biomes interact?

A

Alot of rocks are impereable and therefore making it difficult for water to reach the soils, or the rock can easily be weathered. Sometimes when a rock is weathered its nutrients can distributed into the soils.

Q

Local factors such as drainage can alter the Biome distribution locally and how the flora and abiotic components of Biomes interact?

A

Poor drainage can cause water logging, where the soil is extremely saturated. Plants that are likely survive will be marine.

Q

How does the biosphere provide resources for Indigenous people and local people but is also exploiting commercially for energy, water and minerals?

A

The indigenous people gather their food from natural sources rg. Hunting and lakes etc. As for Medicine, the plants are exploited to create Medicine eg. 7000 drugs created from plants in the rainforest. However, with the increasing demand for energy the exploitation has increased and so habitats and homes must be cleared in order to implicate mines and drills (causing major damage to the environment).
