Topic 8 Flashcards
(7 cards)
1
Q
P-value
A
Probability of getting a sample mean more extreme than the observed mean
2
Q
Significance Level (α)
A
Usually 0.05 (also the chance of making a Type 1 error)
3
Q
High P-value
A
Bigger than α, don’t reject the null hypothesis
4
Q
Low P-Value
A
Less than α, reject the null hypothesis
5
Q
Type 1 Error (false positive)
A
Rejecting the null hypothesis when H0 is true
6
Q
Type 2 Error (false negative)
A
Failing to reject the null hypothesis when HA is true
7
Q
Hypothesis testing a population mean (steps)
A
- Set the hypotheses
H0: μ = null value
HA: μ < or > or ≠ null value - Calculate the point estimate: the sample mean
- Check assumptions and conditions
- Calculate a p-value based on the modelled sampling distribution (draw a picture!)
- Make a decision, and interpret it in context
If p-value < α, reject H0, data provide evidence for HA
If p-value > α, do not reject H0, data do not provide evidence for HA
