Q

Recall the relative charge and relative mass of protons, neutrons and
electrons

A

Proton:
Charge = +1
Mass =1

Neutron:
Charge = 0
Mass = 1

Electron:
Charge = -1
Mass = 1/1836

Q

Explain why atoms contain equal number of protons and electrons

A
  • Protons have a +1 charge and electrons have a -1 charge
  • Atoms are neutral
  • Neutrons have no charge
  • So, there must be the same number of protons and electrons so that the atom is neutral

What are isotopes?

A

 different atoms of the same element containing
the same number of protons but different numbers of neutrons in
their nuclei
