Q

dimension definition

A

Dimension refers to the height, the depth and the width of movement. In other words, dimension is the size of a shape or movement. The size of a movement can help to convey a meaning or create an atmosphere.

Q

Floor and air pattern/ pathways

A

As dancers we move around the space, we create patterns and pathways on the floor. The patterns that are created will often reflect the dynamics of the movement. For example, if the patterns are circular and flowing, the movement may also be soft and flowing, while straight lines could represent sharper and stronger movement.

When bodies are travelling in space they create pathways and patterns. If a choregrapher or dancer works with an awareness of the patterns being created.

Q

direction definition

A

is talking about the direction the dancer is facing the the way their movements go.

Works are usually choreographed so that the performancer faces the audience. Changing the direction or focus, of a part or all of a work can provide interest and engage the audience further into the intent/ concept. The audience may see the performance from a whole new perspective if the movements are viewed differently.

Q

shapes definition

A

the term shape may refer to individual body shapes (the way in which 3 dimensional space is used by the body) and group shapes. Body shapes are present in all actions in dance. Whether dancers are moving or still shapes are continuously being created in the space. Shape can be defined as the positioning of the body or groups of bodies in space.

Q

time options and definitions

A

the use of differeing temporal quaities within dance.

Duration -the length of movement or music
Tempo -the speed of movement or music
Rhythm- combinations of long and short sounds that convey a sense of movement
Accent -an emphasis or strong pulse
Beat- a regular underlying pulse
Metre - the grouping of beats in a recurring pattern, time signatures eg 4/4
Momentum: a build up of the dance moving in the space
Phrasing- the way in which the movement is organised
Rhythmic patterns- the way in wich the rhythm and beat are organised, it can be simple complex or irregular
Stillness- a conscious awareness of stillness being an element of movement, stillness is not an inaction.

Q

dynamics definition

A

Dynamics are basically “how “ the dance is performed, relating this to the weight, force energy and movement quality used throughout a dance. Weight force and energy differ and range over a continuum eg light to heavy and soft to strong. Dynamics give movement life and meaning. Dynamics are important in a dance to add interest and develop a work that has been choreographed thoughtfully. A variety of dynamic movement qualities can assist in creating a contrast in a dance
