Why was Knights of Labour so important?
They accepted minorities
What caused a decline in Union membership in the 1920s?
There was lots of anti-Union resentment
How did the New Deal positively impact Unions?
It introduced labour laws and protection for Unions
When did Union membership reach its peak?
1940s and 50s
What was the 1890 Sherman Anti-trust Act?
An act to try regulate monopolies (failed)
How did the 1964 Civil Rights Act help Trade Unions?
By prohibiting employment based on discrimination, it expanded workers rights
What was the 1963 Equal Pay Act?
It mandated equal pay for equal work, reducing the gender-based wage discrimination
What was the Grape Boycott?
A boycott from 1965-70 which acted as a movement for farm workers rights and brought attention to exploitation of agriculture
What was the 1967 Detroit Newspaper Strike?
A strike against Detroit newspapers which led to unions agreeing on wages, working conditions and other workers rights
What did Reagan do to striking workers in 1981?
PATCO workers went on strike over wages, and Reagan warned them if they didn’t go back to work in 48 hours. The ones who did not were fired, which was over 11,000 workers
What was the 1947 Taft-Hartley Act?
A US law which restricted the activities and power of trade unions
Truman attempted to veto this act but was overpowered by Congress
What is the Legislative Branch?
Congress. It is made up of the House of Representatives and the Senate which work together to pass legislation, which is then passed to the President for approval
What is the Executive Branch?
A part of the US Government that is responsible for carrying out and enforcing laws that are passed by the Legislative Branch. The President is responsible for implementing these laws and overseeing the operations of the government
What is the Judicial Branch?
The Supreme Court and other federal courts. They interpret evaluate laws by applying them to individual cases to decide if they violate the constitution or not
