-These eventually formed into the NAWSA
-There is also the Women’s Christian Temperance Movement which advocated for prohibition
-In general these activism groups were big as women began to protest which they hadn’t done previously
What continuity was there for Women during the Gilded Age?
-Immigrant, working class and AA women see very little changes
-Gender expectations unchanged
How did education opportunities for women increase during the Gilded Age?
-Women’s colleges began to open such as:
-Vassar College (1861)
-Smith College (1871)
-Wellesley College (1875)
How did industrialisation impact women?
-It meant they could get jobs working in textile mills, garment factories and service
-However, their pay was far below men and would only match theirs by 1963
How did women further politically during the Gilded Age?
-Victoria Woodhull became the first woman to try run for president in 1870
-Married women’s property acts
Overall, how did Women further their civil rights during the Gilded Age?
By fighting back against gender norms
