A
When the learning of one skill helps the learning / performance of another.

A
Tennis serve helps with the learning / performance of an over arm volleyball serve.

When is positive transfer likely to occur?
A
- When two skills have similar movement patterns.
- Practice environment is similar to competition environment.

How can positive transfer be encourage by a coach?
A
- Learn a skill thoroughly to encourage PT later on
- Ensure practice is as ‘true to life’ as possible so they are similar as possible.

A
When the learning of one skill hinders the learning/ performance of another.

Example of Negative transfer?
A
Only passing backwards in Rugby may hinder passing forward in football.

When is negative transfer likely to occur?
A
- A familiar skill requires new response.
-When two skills appear similar but aren’t. - Conflicting Skills taught closely together.

How can a coach minimise Negative transfer?
A
- Don’t teach similar skills cos together that may be confusing.
- Draw attention to difference required in required response
