Q

What is a translation vector?

A

It’s stacked numbers inside huge brackets that tell you how far to move the shape.

Q

How do you fully describe a translation?

A

You need to say “This transformation is a translation” and also include:

  • the translation vector

OR

  • a description (like shift up 2 and left 5)

Q

How do you fully describe a rotation?

A

You say, “This is a rotation.” And you have to provide:

  • angle
  • direction
  • center of rotation

Q

What are the steps to draw a rotation?

A
  1. Put a dot where the center of rotation is.
  2. Connect any corner of the shape to the dot.
  3. Make a big angle with that line you just drew (using a protractor).
  4. Trace your shape and the connecting line onto tracing paper.
  5. Stab the center of rotation and turn the tracing paper.
  6. Carefully copy the new shape onto your paper.

Q

How do you draw a reflection?

A
  1. Draw the line of reflection.
  2. Count how far each corner is straight to the line, and then draw the new corner the same distance from the line on the other side. (This means that if the line is on a diagonal, you also have to count diagonally.)

Q

How do you find the line of reflection?

A
  1. Pick two matching corners and make a dot exactly in the middle of them.
  2. Pick two other matching points and make a dot exactly in the middle of them.
  3. Connect your two new dots to make a big long line.
  4. Find the equation of the line using all of your math skills from Unit 4.

Q

How to you find the center of rotation for a shape that is rotated 180°?

A
  1. Connect two corresponding corners with a line segment.
  2. Connect another two corresponding corners with a line segment.
  3. Make a dot at the intersection of your two line segments.
  4. Check answer with tracing paper.

Q

What is rotational symmetry?

A

It’s when a shape looks the same after turning it only part-way.

This picture has three orders of rotation.

Q

What does reduction mean?

A

To makes something smaller.

17
Q

What is a scale factor ?

A

We usually assign it the letter k . And it tells us how much to times by to get a new shape (either a reduction or an enlargement).

For example, if k=2, this means the image is twice as big as original shape.

18
Q

What does image mean when talking about transformations?

A

It’s the new shape that comes out after the transformation.

You can think of it like a picture. When you take a picture, you get an image. It looks a lot like the real thing you took a picture of, but it’s not exactly the same.
