What you need to do when there is a 2+ Rh(D) blood group?
- Send to Redcross to detect whether it is a partial D or weak D.
- Add test code HFF
- Change lab to HOB
- Fill out the FRM form (folder is near the right hand side of the screen).
- Choose QLD lab and Abs detected by CAT.
What is the difference between the partial -D and Weak -D blood group?
- Weak-D is when there is a lower number of the rh(D) protein (antigen) presented on the red blood cell membrane.
- Partial -D is when some part of that protein is missing.
What do you need to do with re-call samples in transfusion?
- Fill out the yellow recall form for XM discrepancy samples.
- Modify those tests into T/F.
- Print out the request form and put the form with the yellow recall form into the yellow envelop to send to “Collection Day-Co” (Data entry).
- Write ST on the tube and place the tube at the back of the antenatal rack.
What to do after running Group and Hold for future XM transfusion samples?
Change the XM test from CAL to HOB.
When can I get Kirksway to send the second EDTA tubes to Calvary to run Group and Hold for samples with discrepancies?
- When the anticipated transfusion time is greater than 3 days.
- When there is no missing info on the request form and the sample has to be signed and dated and timed.
How can I print out the results for a test?
- Go into results query (2.3)
- Type in “I” to print results.
What does CMV stand for?
- Cytomegalovirus
- It is a flu-like virus. Infected individuals could have mild symptoms or no symptoms at all. However, it can be serious or even fatal for babies or people with weakened immune systems.
Why is it important to transfuse pregnant moms with CMV negative blood?
1.Because this can lead to premature birth, low birthweight, hearing or vision problems and other developmental issues.
2. It can cause lif-threatening problems to newborn babies whose immune system have yet to fully develop.
-> therefore baby or pregnant mom should only receive CMV negative bloods from donors who have not been exposed to CMV.
Which labs should you tick on the sendaway Redcross form for genotyping and Abs investigation?
- Genotyping: QLD
- Abs investigation: VIC
When can you add the J610 test for a transfusion sample with discrepancies?
When the sample was not collected by DSPL collector.
Where can I find the blood gas machine in the Calvary hospital?
In CCU and theater.
What to pay attention to when preparing the reagents to run the transfusion QC?
Scan all the QC reagents.
Where can I report the titration results?
Under the comment section.
When do I need to look at a blood film with just the Hb criteria?
- <80 g/L
- <70 g/L for post op.
What to do after the blood report and the sticker has been printed when issuing blood units in Calvary?
Change the unit location to the appropriate Calvary ward or Hospital.
When to use the temperature recording sheet when issuing bloods?
When the unit is not transfused to the patient straightaway and will be put in the ward fridge.
How many emergency units do we need to issue to Calvary, HPH and St Johns?
- 4 for Cavary
- 2 for HPH and St Johns.
What to do when none of the antenatal bloods have arrived at Calvary at 16:30?
Phone Kirkways to ask the staff to have a look at the Calvary box and make sure that it is empty.
What to pay attention to before issuing a unit in GUI?
- Choose Issue unit
- Go through transfusion info, special requirement ( right-hand corner) for compatible units
- The print out paperwork stays in the bag with the unit.
- Put a black pin on the blood bag.
What to do if the history of transfusion table was not filled out on the request form?
- If the transfusion happens within the next 3 days after the group and hold was done- > progress to running the group and hold. Remember to choose “transfusion within 92 days” in GUI and write no transfusion history provided on the patient check form.
- If the transfusion happens after the next 3 days after the group and hold was done -> fill out a recall form and send to Day-Co.
How to recall a sample in transfusion?
- T/F the test
- Fill out the recall form
- Print request forms and highlight the repeated test
- Put all the paperwork in the yellow envelop and send to “Day-co Collection KP”
- Leave the envelop on the table.
What to fill out on the transfusion maintenance sheet?
Only need to fill in the information for the centrifuge speed and the diamed incubator.
What to do when the hospital staffs wanted to send some unit of bloods back to the lab?
Ascertain with the caller how long the units have been out of the fridge and fill out the “out of the fridge” sheet.
How to know which pathologist to call when at 3am on Fri?
- Call the Thursday night on-call pathologist
- this is because the on-call period for pathologist is from 5.30pm to 9.00 am the following morning.
