transition metals in medicine- unfinished Flashcards

1
Q

what is transition metals

A

Elements in groups 3-12 in the Periodic Table.
Presence of d-orbitals.
Also called d-block elements.
IUPAC defines transition metals as elements with an incomplete d subshell or elements that can form a cation with an incomplete d subshell.
Each group of d-block metals is formed by three members and is therefore called a triad.

Q

Characteristic properties of d block metals

A

Nearly all d-block metals are
hard,
malleable
ductile
conduct electricity and heat.
Paramagnetism is a phenomenon that is often observed for d-block metal compounds.
Coordination complexes are typical.
