Q

What is the water cohesion theory

A

As water leaves the plant through the stomata because water is polar this pulls up more water through the xylem as water is cohesive.

Q

How does temperature affect transpiration

A

Increase the rate-
More kinetic energy = more osmosis in and out of plant / more evaporation out of the stomata which is followed by more because of cohesion theory

Q

How does light intensity affect transpiration

A

Increase rate
As high light intensity means the stomata will open for CO2 but also letting water evaporate out

Q

How does humidity affect transpiration

A

More water potential outside of plant slows / stops water diffusing out of the plant through osmsis

Q

What happens because water is polar

A

Cohesive forces with pull other water molecules via hydrogen bonds which helps water travel up the xylem

Q

Why do plants open their stomata at day

A

To allow co2 in for photosynthesis

Plant moves calcium into guard cells which causes a different water potential and water moves via osmosis into the guard cells making them turgid and opening them
