Disease Flashcards
How do fungi infect plant cells
The hyphae penetrate the host cells to digest them.
What type of patheogen is HIV
Virus
How are STIs and STDs transmitted
Intercourse and through other bodily fluid like blood from used needles
How does HIV affect the body
It targets T cells in the immune system and gradually destroys it
More common in women
How are protists contracted.
When the vector (unaffected host) passes it on through bodily fluids in to another animal e.g malaria in mosquitoes
What is influenza
A viral infection
What does influenza do to the body
It infects and kills the ciliated epithelial cells in the gas exchange system leaving the airways open to infection. Often fatal. No cure
How to manage plant diseases
Compartmentalisation Cut off infected parts and burn them to prevent contamination
How do plants recover from damage
Compartmentalisation, They block off that part of its stem to prevent diseases from spreading to the rest of it
Bacterial Meningitis
Bacterial meningitis is a serious infection that affects the membranes surrounding the brain and spinal cord. It is caused by certain types of bacteria, most commonly Streptococcus pneumoniae, Neisseria meningitidis, and Haemophilus influenzae. These bacteria can enter the bloodstream and travel to the brain and spinal cord, leading to inflammation and infection of the meninges.
