Transplants Flashcards
(11 cards)
Why would you need to consider age?
If they are young they have more to live for.
Younger people are usually stronger than the elderly (80+)
What are the things you have to consider if you’re choosing who’s getting an organ transplant?
Age their health history weight what their smoker status is how much they drink what tissue type/type of blood they have
Why would their current health be important to know if they want a transplant?
If they are healthy they have a greater chance of surviving the operation.
Why should you know their health history when deciding whether or not to allow them to have an organ transplant?
And they had an organ transplant before and if so did it work?
This is to predict the likelihood of the operation being a success.
Why is the patient’s weight important in order to decide whether or not to give them an organ transplant?
The patient is more likely to survive the operation if they are physically fit.
Why is it important to know what the patients smoker status when considering whether or not to give them an organ transplant?
If the patient smokes they could damage the new organ.
Why is it important to consider how mush the patient drinks?
They could damage the new organ if they do drink.
Why is it important to know what tissue-type/blood type the patient is?
To make sure the organ is compatible and won’t be rejected by the body.
Why should you (not) allow liver transplants for alcoholics?
(Pro)
The alcoholic could be recovering. They could need it desperately. They deserve to have the transplant.
(Con)
It could be a waste. They could ruin the organ anyway. There could be people with a greater need for the organ. The patient could be too unfit to survive the operation.
Why should you (not) allow liver transplants for the clinically obese?
(Pro)
They could be improving weight wise. They could need it desperately. They deserve to have the transplant.
(Con)
There could be people with a greater need for the organ. The patient could be too unfit to survive the operation.
What would you do about the shortage of organs available for transplants?
Have people opt Out instead of opting in.
Children should be educated about how organ transplants are important.
