Disease Defence Flashcards
(9 cards)
How can antiseptics can be used to prevent the spread of infections?
Antiseptics are used to prevent bacteria from multiplying. It is usually used on cuts.
Where can we get some of our antibiotics from?
Plants- plants do this to protect themselves from disease- humans take these chemicals from the plants so we can protect ourselves from disease.
What is an antibacterial?
These prevent bacteria from multiplying. They cannot be ingested because they are toxic. We usually spread these on surfaces.
What are antifungals used for?
These are used to kill fungi. These are usually liquidy substances.
Why wouldn’t a doctor prescribe antibiotics for a cold?
It is a virus. Antibiotics are used to treat bacteria.
When will doctors prescribe antibiotics?
If you have a bacteria caused by a bacteria.
What is resistant Bacteria? Give an example.
Bacteria that has mutated that mean that they can take longer to treat the bacteria or it could mean that the antibiotics could stop working.
e.g. MRSA.
How is resistant bacteria?
Bacteria multiplies Copy's DNA Mistakes made- mutations Mutations- negative, neutral, positive Possibly More resistant to antibiotics Longer to kill If you stop taking the antibiotics they survive They reproduce Copy DNA if this goes on for generations- the bacteria becomes more and more resistant
What is a halo?
The circle around an antibiotic/antiseptic that is clear of bacteria. The bigger the halo the more effective it is.
