Transport In Plants Flashcards

1
Q

What is Phloem?

A

The tubes that allow food to move or transport around the plant, is a living tissue, the cells are dead

Q

Wha is Xylem?

A

Is a tissue that carries water and mineral ions from the soil to the rest of the plant, composed of hollow tubes stacked together, the cells are dead

Q

What is transport so important?

A

Food movement- All cells need sugars for respiration as well as for providing materials for growth.

Water and dissolved mineral ions from the roots- the plant needs water for photosynthesis and also needs water for support, the plant also needs glucose for respiration

Q

What is the Transpiration stream?

A

6 stages:

1) Water passes into the root hair fell by osmosis, from the weak solution in the vacuole, through a partially permeable membrane (cell membrane)
2. Water passes from the root hair fell to the xylem vessel by osmosis
3. Water passes up the xylem vessel, it is sucked up by the transpiration pull, caused by water lost in the leaves
4. Water enters the leaf in the mid rib, it is carried in the veins to reach all parts of the leaf
5. Some of the water is used in the leaf for photosynthesis, some water keeps the leaf cells turgid so they are stiff and can turn to face the sun
6. Water vapour diffuses into the air through stomata form the moist leaf. This loss of water from the leaves is called transpiration
