17
Q

What determines a Type A category?

A

Maximum dose rate at the surface of the package and the Transport Index

18
Q

What is the transport index?

A

The dose rate at 1 m from the package in mSv/h multiplied by 100.

This value should be rounded UP to the first decimal place (e.g. 1.13 -> 1.2, unless <0.05 which can be rounded to 0)

19
Q

What is the golden rule for the TI value for drivers?

A

TI must not exceed 50

20
Q

What is the minimum external dimension of a Type A package?

21
Q

What conditions must a Type A package withstand?

A

Normal transport conditions without an increase in the maximum dose rate at the surface of the package or any loss/dispersal of material

  • Rainfall for 1 hour
  • Dropped from 1 m
  • Stacking
  • Piercing
  • Temperature and pressure test
22
Q

Why must type A packages have a seal?

A

To evidence it hasn’t been opened

23
Q

What is the anatomy of a Type A package?

A

Cardboard
Polystyrene
Metal can
Polystyrene
Lead pot + sample
Absorbent material
Lids

24
Q

What is an industrial package?

A

Typically a sealed metal drum with radioactive waste or ores, or large waste containers

25
What is a Type B package?
Activity levels exceed A1 or A2 values and must meet additional accident requirements to Type A
26
What is a Type C package?
Used for air transport and is able to withstand enhanced thermal, impact, puncture etc. tests to ensure integrity after an air disaster
27
What do you need to consider when transporting a large amount of NORM?
May be in scope of regulations
28
How are excepted packages labelled?
UN number on the exterior Radioactive marking visible upon opening and on instruments/articles Consignor and consignee name and address
29
How are Type A packages labelled?
"Type A" clearly marked on the exterior Consignor and consignee name and address Two labels with: - Radioactive trefoil - Contents - Activity - Transport index (YELLOW only)
30
What should Type A internal containers be labelled with?
Radiation trefoil The isotope Activity Surface dose rate Source serial number
31
What are the two main documents required for transport?
1. Transport document 2. Instructions for the driver
32
What should the transport document contain?
1. Header with reference to the regulations 2. Consignor and consignee name and address 3. UN number, class and proper shipping title 4. Isotope, form and activity 5. Package category and TI 6. Tunnel restriction code 7. Consignor signed statement
33
What are some rules for the driver?
Must not carry anyone without carriers permission (or at all if it is Type A YELLOW) Must be in the personal compartment at all times Must not leave vehicle unattended in public places if Type A YELLOW Must have a 2 m clear space around the vehicle if parked for more than 1 hour Drivers must be certified Driver must keep package in a safe place if deliverable and inform secretary of state Driver must immediately inform police if a package is lost, stolen or damaged
34
What is a UN number?
Classification based on the type of package, e.g. radioactive material, excepted, Type A, non-special 4 digit numbers
35
What is the dose rate limit at 2 m from the vehicle?
0.1 mSv/h
36
What is the maximum dose rate from any point around the vehicle?
2 mSv/h
37
What is the dose rate limit in the drivers cab?
0.02 mSv/h
38
What must be on the outside of the vehicle when transporting radioactive material?
Appropriate placards - YELLOW label on both sides and the rear
39
39
What is a DGSA?
Dangerous Goods Safety Advisor - Required by ADR to appoint someone with appropriate training certificate - Required if delivering more than excepted packages - Advises and trains staff involved in transport
40
Whose duty is it to appoint a DGSA?
Carriers duty, but consignors duty to check the carrier has a DGSA
