how does cbt work

A
  1. assessment , therapist + patient , understand problem , set clear goals
  2. make clear plan to achieve goals
    ( key part of cbt is identifying negative / irrational thoughts that may make situation worse)
  3. therapy focuses on changing irrational bad thoughts and replacing them with more realistic ones
  4. cbt helps patient develop healthier behaviours
  5. some therapists use techniques from bct ( beck) others use ellis

how is that done ? 3 types of disputing

A

logical disputing= questions whether belief makes sense

empirical disputing = looks for evidence to support / refute belief

pragmatic disputing = considers whterhr belief is helpful

A

p- lots of evidence, showing effectiveness

e- John march , compared cbt to antidepressant , and then a combo of both , treating 327 depressed adolescents , after 36 weeks , 81% of cbt group , 81% of anti dep, and 86% of combo significantly improved, so cbt just as effective when used on its own and with a. combo

e- + fairly brief therapy , 6 -12 lessons , = cost effect ,

l= so good case for making it first treatment in nhs

cbt limitaiton , depression oo severe

A

p- depression too severe,

e- can’t do what cbt needs them to do e.g do homework, challenge irrational thoughts ,+ attending sessions requires motivation/committment

e- dont have that cos so severe

l- so drug therapy is better for them , till they can be stable enough to do psych treatment
