1
Q
what does Novaco describe anger as?
A
strong emotion that can affect a person’s physiology, cognition and behaviour. some offenders are more likely to see certain situations as stressful/threatening so may act aggressively rather than rationally
2
Q
what is the assumption of anger management?
A
the offender’s inability to control their anger is the root cause of offending
3
Q
what is the ‘cycle of anger’?
A
- triggering event
- negative thoughts
- emotional response
- physical symptoms
- behavioural response
4
Q
summarise what an anger management programme can involve
A
- identify triggers & learn to control them
- relexation techniques
- small groups so the offender can cope with others opinions
- around 10 sessions
- complete an anger diary
- learn skills to reduce frequency, intensity and duration of anger to lower likelihood of aggression
5
Q
what is the cognitive preparation phase?
A
- offenders identify anger provoking situations in order to recognise when outbursts may occur
- think about patterns of anger and negative consequences of anger on others
- challenge these thought patterns
- consider theoretical scenarios to assess current thinking and challenge this
- discuss alternatives to behaviour
6
Q
what is the skill aquisition phase?
A
- learn effective ways of dealing with anger
- learn coping skills eg count to ten to create an automatic response from regular practise
- slow breathing or meditation
- cognitive coping strategies will help them control the feelings of anger and replace these emotions with acceptable responses
7
Q
what is the application phase?
A
- role plays of anger provoking situations
- positively reinforced for appropriate, non-aggressive responses
- practise new skills
- reconstruct events where offender lost control in the past
- controlled environments to reduce potential harm
- must feel safe with no fear of punishment
- anger diaries to self control and assess to see the progress of the therapy
- important to reinforce EVERY time they are successful in a role play
8
Q
Three core aims of AMP
A
- relaxation techniques (e.g. slowing heart rate down)
- cognitive restructuring ( retraining though patterns to more desirable thought patterns
- assertiveness training (dealing with the behavioural element of anger)
9
Q
A
10
Q
Why might AMP be counterproductive?
A
- can equip offenders with additional control mechanisms and increase their capacity to manipulate a situation to their advantage
- some offenders did not engage in anger, but instead chose to achieve a specific goal
- e.g. to intimidate during a robbery or imposition of a will on a partner in domestic violence
