What is trichomoniasis vaginalis?
A
A sexually trasmitted PARASITIC infection in the urethra of men and vagina of women

What are the signs and symptoms of trichomoniasis?
A
50% are asymptomatic
50% - Non specific symptoms:
Vaginal discharge - varies but can be FROTHY, YELLOW-GREEN, FISHY SMELL
Itching
Dysuria
Dyspareunia
Balanitis
Signs:
Strawberry cervix
Alkaline pH of vagina

Investigations of trichomoniasis?
A
Charcoal swab with microscopy (taken from posterior fornix)
OR low vaginal swab w/ microscopy
In men: urethral swab or first catch urine

Management of trichomoniasis?
A
Referral to GUM clinic for diagnosis, treatment and contact tracing
Metronidazole
