Trifle comes from the French term “trufle” and means something whimsical or of little consequence. This is due to the fact that trifle was originally made for Sunday brunch with was made of leftover dessert.

A

The earliest recipes - consisting of cream with sugar, ginger, and rosewater - date back to 1587 when Thomas Dawson published it. 60 years later eggs and alcohol were added to the original recipe in the form of custard. Finally, in 1747 jelly was added to the dessert.
