to travel : You would like to travel. / They would like to travel.

the travel plan : They make a travel plan.
der Reiseplan, die Reisepläne : Sie machen einen Reiseplan.
the destination : They don’t have a specific destination yet.
das Reiseziel, die Reiseziele : Sie haben noch kein bestimmtes Reiseziel.
the vacation : They plan their vacation.

Note : This is mainly used when you are talking about time off from work.

to go on vacation : The WG (living community) is going on a vacation to Bavaria.
in den Urlaub fahren : Die WG fährt in den Urlaub nach Bayern.
to spend vacation : They are spending their vacation in the mountains.
den Urlaub verbringen : Sie verbringen ihren Urlaub in den Bergen.
to take a vacation : They are taking a one week vacation.
Urlaub machen : Sie machen eine Woche Urlaub.
to prepare a trip / vacation : They have to prepare the trip / vacation.
die Reise / den Urlaub vorbereiten : Sie müssen die Reise / den Urlaub vorbereiten.
the school vacation :
die Ferien (kein Singular) : In den Ferien fahren die Kinder zu ihren Großeltern. During the school vacation, the children go to their grandparents.
Note : This is used when it is a group of people like students who have time off from school.
