  • Broad tendinous insertion of abductor muscle is under considerable strain
  • Subject to tendonitis
  • Subject to degeneration leading to tendon tears
  • Trochanteric bursa can also become inflamed
  • Similiar to rotator cuff problems of the shoulder

  • Pain and tenderness in the region of the greater trochanter
  • Pain on resisted abduction

  • Anti-inflammatories

  • Steroid injection
  • No surgical treatment has a proven benefit
