Trophs Flashcards
(8 cards)
Autotrophs
An organism that produces its own food. Take in inorganic compounds and expel organic compounds
Heterotroph
An organism that obtains its energy and nutrients from external living organisms.
Take in organic compounds and expel inorganic compounds.
Organic compounds
Compounds that are not found on the periodic table. Autotrophs expel these, heterotrophs take these in
Inorganic compounds
Compounds found in the periodic table. Autotrophs take these in, heterotrophs expel these.
Photoheterotroph
An organism that obtains it’s energy from sunlight and carbon from organic compounds ( Not carbon dioxide)
Photoautotroph
Organisms that carry out photosynthesis using energy from sunlight, carbon dioxide and water producing organic compounds.
Chemoautotrophs
An organism that uses the oxidation of inorganic molecules (e.g. Sulfur, magnesium) as it’s energy source and carbon dioxide to synthesize organic compounds
Chemoheterotrophs
Organisms that are unable to produce their own organic compounds. These organisms must ingest carbon molecules (e.g. sulfur, carbohydrates, lipids and proteins) synthesized by other organisms. They use inorganic molecules (e.g. Sulfur, magnesium) as their energy source.
