Tropical Rainforests Flashcards
(9 cards)
What is the soil like in the rainforest?
Thin and infertile
How does interdependence help the soils?
Leaf litter from trees decomposes and provides enough nutrients for vegetation to stay alive
How are jaguars adapted?
Spotty fur to camouflage it to the forest floor (dappled sunlight)
How are parrots adapted?
Strong, sharp beaks to crack open nuts
How are spider monkeys adapted?
Long tails to cling to branches. Sharp claws to dig into tree bark
How are poison dart frogs adapted?
Bright colours to warn away predators
What are some characteristics of the tropical rainforest?
Climate is warm and wet
Rich in vegetation
Soils mainly thin due to rain washing away nutrients before they become part of soil
What are the issues related to biodiversity in the tropical rainforest?
Very high biodiversity
Human exploitation reduces it
Species become endangered/ extinct
How does human exploitation affect biodiversity?
Decline in ecosystem productivity
