Tsunami Flashcards
(9 cards)
Surface waves on water bodies created by the transfer of energy from wind to the water
Wind generated waves
A series of extremely long ocean waves generated by a large and sudden displacement of water, most commonly caused by earthquakes, volcanic eruptions, or landslides
Tsunami waves
Occurs in water inundates or covers normally dry coastal land due to high tides or storm surges
Coastal flooding
The movement of the ocean floor, either upwards or downwards, often caused by earthquakes, volcanic eruptions, or landslides
Seafloor displacement
What is the most common cause of a tsunami?
An earthquake on the sea floor
Where do tsunami generating events commonly occur?
The Pacific Ocean, along the Ring of fire
How are tsunami waves different than wind generated waves?
Tsunami waves are generated by underwater disturbance, while wind waves are created by friction between the wind and the water’s surface
Why can a tsunami be so devastating or how do tsunami waves affect coastal areas?
Due to their enormous power and excessive flooding they cause in coastal areas
How do coastal communities prepare for tsunami events?
Conducting hazard assessments, developing evacuation plans, establishing warning systems, and promoting public awareness
