Tutorial 11 - Occlusion Flashcards
(8 cards)
define Intercuspal Position
the complete intercuspation of the opposing teeth independent of condylar position
Define Rest Position/Rest Vertical Dimension
the postural position of the mandible when an individual is resting comfortably in an upright position and the associated muscles are in a state of minimal contractual activity
define Occlusal Vertical Dimension
the distance between two selected anatomic or marked points (usually one on the tip of the nose and the other on the chin) when in maximal intercuspal position
define Working Side
that side of the mandible that moves away from the medial line in a lateral excursion
define Non-Working Side
that side of the mandible that moves toward the medial line in a lateral excursion
What si the function of a facebow?
an instrument used to record the spatial relationship of the maxillary arch to some anatomic reference point or points and then transfer this relationship to an articulator; it orients the dental cast in the same relationship to the opening axis of the articulator
How can articulators be classified? When would you choose to use each type?
*Simple hinge
*Average Value
*Semi-Adjustable
*Fully Adjustable
*Arcon
*Non-Arcon
*The more complex the restoration the more use an articular is. The most popular type is the average value non-arcon for fixed prosthodontics and the average value arcon for removable prosthodontics
What will determine whether you record jaw relations in intercuspal position or retruded contact position?
Patients without an occlusal stop to indicate the correct intercuspal position. The occlusal vertical dimension is calculated by subtracting an appropriate value for freeway space from the patient’s resting facial height measured with e.g. the Willis gauge. The horizontal jaw relationship recorded should be the retruded contact position.
