Q

BSCs has a air filtration system called? State its function and traits.

A

High Efficiency Particulate Air (HEPA) Filters.
* 99.97% to 99.99% efficient at the most penetrating particle size ~0.3 um
* Remove particles from the air stream
-Interception
-Inertial impaction
-Diffusion
-Electrostatic charge

Q

Describe Class I biological safety Cabinets (BSCs) based on how it operates and the protection it offers.

A

-Room air is drawn in through the
front opening, passes over the work
surface and is discharged through the
exhaust duct
-Directional airflow removes any
aerosol particles generated on the
work surface away from the operator
and into the exhaust duct

Protection:
-personnel protection
-environmental protection
-Does not protect product from contaminated room air.

Q

Describe Class II biological safety Cabinets (BSCs) based on how it operates and the protection it offers.

A

-Allows only HEPA-filtered air supply to
flow over the work surface
-Four types (AI, AII, BI and BII) based
on construction type, airflow velocities
and patterns, and exhaust systems
-used for risk group 2 and 3. (4 with positive pressure suit)

Protection:
-personnel protection
-environmental protection
* Protects product (work materials)
from contaminated room air.

Q

Describe Class III biological safety Cabinets (BSCs) based on how it operates and the protection it offers.

A

-Sealed to provide maximum
containment (for high risk agents) or positive pressure suit (used in BSL-4 cabinet
laboratories.
-work with attached rubber sleeves
- Supply air is HEPA filtered; Exhaust
air is double HEPA filtered
- Decontamination required prior to
removing work materials

Protection:
-personnel protection
-environmental protection
* Protects product (work materials)
from contaminated room air.

Q

What are Laminar flow clean benches? And its protection?

A

workbench with own filtered air supply, used to work with non hazardous materials where clean, particle-free air quality is required.

Protection:
- Provides product protection only
* DOES NOT provide protection to
personnel or to the environment
* Not designed to contain aerosols

Q

What are chemical fume hoods? Protection?

A

-Ventilation device that limits exposure to
hazardous or toxic fumes, vapors or dusts,
- independent exhaust system and operates with single-pass air discharged outside the building.
-Used when working with volatile chemicals
or chemical carcinogens
-Do not have HEPA filters
- DO NOT USE FOR BIOHAZARDOUS MATERIAL.

Protection:
-Only protects the worker from exposure
to chemicals and noxious gases
