types of attachment Flashcards
(6 cards)
1
Q
who developed the strange situation
A
Ainsworth (1970)
2
Q
what was the procedure of the strange situation
A
- controlled observation
- procedure designed to measure the security of attachment a baby displayed towards a caregiver
- the procedure had seven episodes
- each lasting 3 minutes
3
Q
what were the behaviors used to judge attachment
A
- proximity seeking
- exploration and secure base behaviour
- stranger anxiety
- separation anxiety
- response to reunion
4
Q
findings of the strange situation
A
- insecure avoidant attachment (type A)
- explore freely, do not seek proximity or show secure base behavior
- no stranger or separation anxiety
- 20 - 25% of babies - secure attachment (type B)
- happily explore but regularly go back to their caregiver
- moderate strangers and separation anxiety
- accept comfort at reunion
60- 75% are secure - insecure resistant attachment (type C)
- seek greater proximity and explore less
- high levels of strangers and separation anxiety
- resit comfort at reunion
- 3% are insecure resistant
5
Q
strength of strange situation
A
- good predictive validity
- outcomes predict aspects of the babies later development
- babies assessed as type B have better outcomes in childhood and adulthood, perform better in school and are not involved in bullying
- as adults alos have better mental health - good reliability
- good inter- rater reliability
- Bick et al (2012) tested inter-rater reliability and found agreement on 94% of cases
- high level of control and behaviors involve large movements which are easy to observe
6
Q
limitation of strange situation
A
- may be culturally bound
- developed in the us and Britain
- babies have different experiences in different cultures which may affect their response to the strange situation
- high levels of insecure resistance in Japan due to unusual nature of of mother baby separation
