Observations of the infant’s response to the following was made:
-separation anxiety
-reunion behaviour
-stranger anxiety
Data was collected by observers using a one way mirror
They recorded what the child was doing every 15 seconds using behavior categories and scoring the intensity on a scale of 1-7.

limitations of the strange situation

  • Not all psychologists agree that it is measuring attachment Kagan 1982 suggests that genetics anxiety could account for the differences in childhood and adulthood
  • May not apply to all culture babies have different experiences in different cultures for example japanese babies don’t tend to be away from their mothers
