Who developed the strange situation procedure?

What is The Strange Situation?
- The SS is suitable for infants ages between 9-19 months
- Infants take part in the procedure with their mothers
- The procedure takes place in a purpose built laboratory playroom
- It consists of 8 controlled and pre-determined stages
What are the stages in the strange situation?
1} The mother and infant enter the laboratory playroom
2} The infant plays with some toys whilst the mother sits down
3} A stranger enters the lab playroom and sits down
4} The mother leaves and the stranger tried to interact with the infant
5} The mother returns and the stranger leaves
6} The mother leaves the infant
7} The stranger returns and tries to interact with the infant
8} The mother returns and attempts to pick up the infant whilst the stranger leaves
What is recorded behaviour?
- A group of researchers recorded their behaviours every 15 secounds
What behaviour did the researchers record?
- Seperation anxiety
- Stranger anxiety
- Reunion behaviour
- Use of the mother as a secure base
What were the 3 attachment types?
- Secure
- Insecure-avoidant
- Insecure-resistance
What is Secure attachment?
- 66% had it
- Used the mother as a secure base and only explored when mother was present
- Got stranger anixety but was happy to play with strangers if mother was present
- Had seperation anxiety
- Had reunion behaviour
What is Insecure - avoidant?
- 22% had it
- Did not use the mother as a secure base
- Had low stranger anxiety, ignored them
- Had low seperation anxiety, little response
- Did not have reunion behaviour
What is Insecure - resistance?
- 12% had it
- Did not use the mother as a secure base, were unwilling to explore
- Had high stranger anxiety
- Had high seperation anxiety
- Had reunion behaviour
