Types Of Graphs Flashcards
(11 cards)
Define a bar chart
-a diagram that represents the frequencies of non continuous data
Describe the features included in a bar chart-what type of data is it used to represnt? What is on the X axis? What is on the Y axis?Colums?
-Represents nominal data (in categories)ON THE X AXIS.
-Frequency of each variable is represented on the Y axis
-Colums do not touch and have an equal width/spacing
-Use a key if displaying 2 values together
Define a histogram
A diagram that represents the distrubution of frequencies for discrete or continuous data
Describe the main features of a histogram-Data?What is on the X axis? What is on the Y axis?Bars?
-Represnts continuous data(e.g time)-increases on the X axis.
-Frequency of values on the Y axis
-Bars touch-each column width is equal to
Define a line graph
A diagram that shows a linear resperentation of frequencies of data
Describe the main features of a line graph-Data?What is on the X axis? What is on the Y axis?
-Resprests continuous data
-uses points connected by lines to show how something changes over time
-draw a line from the mid point of each bar then connnect the points together
-IV on x axis
-DV on Y axis
-2 or more lines can be plotted to show comparison
Define a pie chart
-a diagrm the represents data proportionally-as part of a whole picture of responses
Describe the main features of a pie chart-Data?How to calculate a pie chart?
-Reprents the proportion off different catergories(norminal data)
-Each slice represents a fraction of the total
-How to calculate-Work out the total amount
-take each number and divide by the total then multiply by 360=size in degrees
Define a scatter graph
A diagram that represents a relationship/correlation between 2 or more co variables.
Scatter graph-What are they used for? What are the co ordinates? What goes on the X and Y axis? How to create a scatter graph?
-used for measuring the relationship between co variables(which are the co ordinates)
-Either co variables can go on the X axis or Y axis
-Plot an x on the graph where the 2 co variables meet
-pattern of points=correlations
Define frequency tables-Which data is it suitable to represnt?
-A table which shows the rate of occurrence for a number of measured values/categrories(norminal data)
-Shows how frequently certain items occurs
