Book musical
Where the songs move along the plot and narrative, playing a crucial role. They aren’t fully sung through though.
Examples include Les Miserables, The Phantom of the Opera and West Side Story.
Concept musical
This is a musical that has a central theme that’s more important than the story. The plot is usually instructed and dance, staging and music help convey the theme.
Examples include Company (Sondheim), Cabaret and Cats (Lloyd Weber).
Dance musical
This is a musical where storytelling is mostly conveyed through dance, with singing potentially incorporated. Dance is a key element its many styles used, expressing emotion.
Examples include West Side Story (Bernstein), Chicago and Mary Poppins.
Sung-through musical
This is when there’s no spoken dialogue and everything is sung,always seen in opera.
Examples include Hadestown and SIX the musical.
Rock musical
Thus us when rock music is a main feature of a musical.
Examples include Rent, Spring Awakenijg Dan Hedwig and the Angry Inch.
Jukebox musical
There’s two types. An autobiographical, when an artist or bands songs form the basis of the musical based on their life stories, or a non-autobiographical where the plot is an original story, but the score is still comprised of famous musicians.
Pastiche
A pastiche is a musical that imitates the style of earlier eras of musicals, often taking direct influence from a previous work.
Examples include Follies, Gypsy and Assassins.
