what is a POM
medicine that needs prescription by an authorised prescriber
what must be on a prescription
-patient details: name, address, and DOB (if under 12)
-Drug details: quantity, name, strength, form
-Drug dosage and treatment days
-prescriber signature
-supply date
-prescriber/pharmacy’s address, name and telephone number
what is a green, blue, yellow, lilac, white, pink prescription form used for
Green: FP10SS, FP10NC, FP10HNC, used by prescriber, GP, nurse etc. Must include the type of prescribe
Blue: FP10MDA-SS, FP10MDA-S FP10SP AND FP10HMDA, same roughly but used for addiction treatments/ CDs
Yellow: FP10D, dentist
Lilac: FP10PN (nurse) FP10SP (supplementary prescriber)
White: FP10CDF, CD requisition form
Pink: FP10CDSS, prescribers of schedule 2 and 3 drugs in the private sector, dispensed in community pharmacy
what is the electronic prescription service
when patients don’t bring a paper prescription and instead it is submitted electronically from the GP to a nominated pharmacy
what if a patient does not have a nominated dispenser/pharmacy for the prescription to be sent to
GP practitioner will print off a prescription token that has a unique bar code which can be used by the dispenser to download the legal electronic prescription to be dispensed
what if the dispense is unable to dispense the electronic prescription sent to them
-they print off a dispensing token and gives it to the patient to take to another community pharmacy
-the other pharmacy will use the unique barcode the download the prescription and dispense (or ‘pull down’ the legal prescription from the Spine
