Types of reactions Flashcards
(6 cards)
Synthesis (Direct Combination)
Definition: Two or more substances combine to form one product.
Analogy: A boy and a girl come to a dance and end up dancing together.
General Equation: A + B → AB
Decomposition
Definition: A compound breaks down into smaller parts, usually with heat.
Analogy: A couple fights and leaves separately.
General Equation: AB → A + B
Single Displacement
Definition: One element replaces another in a compound.
Analogy: A couple is dancing, and someone else cuts in.
General Equation: AB + M → MB + A
Double Displacement (Ionic Precipitation)
Definition: Two compounds exchange parts; often forms a precipitate.
Analogy: Two couples switch partners.
General Equation: AB + CD → AD + CB
Neutralization
Definition: Acid reacts with base to make salt and water.
Analogy: Dancing leads to sweating — releases salt and water.
General Equation: Acid + Base → Salt + Water
Combustion
Definition: A substance reacts with oxygen and releases energy (heat/light).
Analogy: The boy goes outside, breathes oxygen, and exhales CO₂.
General Equation: Hydrocarbon + O₂ → CO₂ + H₂O
