U3 AOS1 P4 Photosynthesis Flashcards
(31 cards)
What is Photosynthesis?
Action of transforming light energy into chemical energy
What organisms carry out Photosynthesis?
Plants, Algae, Some Bacteria and Some Protists
What are the 2 INPUTS of Photosynthesis in the Equation?
Carbon Dioxide + Water
What are the main 3 OUTPUTS of Photosynthesis in the Equation?
Glucose + Water + Oxygen
What 2 things does Photosynthesis need to occur?
Chlorophyll and Light Energy
What are Autotrophs?
Organisms that produce their own energy
What are Heterotrophs?
Organism that absorbs food in the form of organic material obtained from their environment
What is the WORDED formula of Photosynthesis?
Carbon Dioxide + Water ——-> Glucose + Water + Oxygen
chlorophyll
light energy
What is the CHEMICAL formula of Photosynthesis?
6CO2 + 12H2O ——-> C6H12O6 + 6H20 + 6O2
chlorophyll
light energy
What are 2 stages of Photosynthesis?
Light Dependant Stage and Light Independent Stage
Where is chlorophyll found?
Chloroplasts
Where does Light Dependant Stage occur?
Within the Grana of Chloroplasts (thylakoid membranes)
Where does Light Independent Stage occur?
Stroma of Chloroplast
What is the Oxygen produced from Photosynthesis used for?
Aerobic Respiration
Why are leaves flat?
Have a larger surface area, meaning more chloroplasts have access to light energy
What is a Stomata?
Pores on the underside of the leaf which CO2 enters. Water also leaves when they are open.
What system transports water to photosynthetic cells?
Xylem
What is the main function of Chloroplasts?
To trap energy from sunlight to be used in Photosynthesis
What 3 things does Stroma contain?
Enzymes, Ribosomes and DNA
What is chlorophyll?
Green pigment in plants which traps blue and red light energy
What is Endosymbiosis?
Process which describes the origin of chloroplasts from the engulfment of cyanobacteria.
“The cells and the cyanobacteria had a symbiotic relationship”, what does symbiotic mean?
Symbiotic refers to a relationship between at least two organisms have chosen to stay together to benefit each other
What are 3 key points of evidence for the symbiotic theory?
1) Ribosomes of the Chloroplasts and the Cyanobacteria are similar
2) Cells cannot make new chloroplasts, so they therefore are not part of a cell
3) Chloroplasts have a double membrane, like the cyanobacteria
What happens in the Light Dependent stage?
Sunlight is trapped by chlorophyll, and converted into chemical energy which is then used to split water molecules
