UGIS Flashcards
(34 cards)
UGIS requires
8 oz. of BaS04
Contrast media in UGIS
Thin Barium Sulfate mixture
Thick mixture of BaS04
Water soluble iodinated CM
Types of examination
Single Contrast Examination
Double Contrast Examination
Dual Contrast Examination
Hypotonic Duodenography
BaS04 suspension is administered during initial flouro exam
Single contrast examination
Gives the patient a gas producing substance in the form of powder crystals then a small amount of high density Barium suspension
Double contrast examination
Anticholinergic
Antispasmodics
Glucagon
Allow for greater distention of the stomach and bowel improved visualization / relax GI tract
Glucagon
Example of glucagon
Atropine
Patient is first examined using double contrast examination and on completion of single contrast exam
Biphasic
Dual Contrast
Welin Technique exam
Less frequently used examination
Detection of lesions in the duodenum
Hypotonic Duodenography
Indications of UGIS
To demonstrate:
Gastric, duodenal and peptic ulcer Hiatal hernia Gastric varices and colics Obstruction Tumor and carcinoma Gastritis
Ulceration of the mucosal lining caused by pepsin
Peptic ulcer
A mass of undigested material that becomes trapped in the stomach
Bezoar
Compulsive urge to pull out one’s own hair
Trichotillomania
Contra-indications
Sensitivity
History of bowel perforation laceration
It can be used in place of barium sulfate
Oral water -soluble iodinated contrast media
Fundus of the stomach is the most posterior portion
Supine position
The fundus is in the highest position causing gas to fill part of the stomach
RAO / recumbent position
Barium settles in the more anterior body and pylorus portion stomach
In RAO / recumbent position
Demonstration of the type and position of the stomach
Upright PA Projection
Demonstration of the RIGHT retrogastric space, the duodenal loop in profile and duodenojejunal junction
Recumbent Right lateral position
Demonstration of LEFT retrogastric space
Upright Left Lateral Position
Demonstration of gastro-duodenal surface
Recumbent PA Projection
To prevent pressing of stomach and duodenum against the vertebrae
Suitable pads under thorax and pelvis
