• Permits were granted to allow the water companies to extract water from pipes
• They issued hosepipe bans to conserve water that was available

• Problems for farming - Water shortages made it difficult to find water for crops and livestock.
• Restrictions in homes- Hosepipe bans were introduced which affected around 20 million people.

What were the causes of the UK drought? (Wind direction, pressure, temp)

Answer 3

Throughout 2010 much of the wind direction was from an easterly direction. This meant that less moisture was picked up (having travelled over the continent) and therefore Western areas received less rainfall than average.
There was also an extended presence of high pressure which made it very dry and the weather was much hottter than usual.
